Gather your ingredients. Slice the onion into tanglers of your desired length and thickness.
Place the onion in a sealed bag with the buttermilk for 15 to 20 minutes. Mix the remaining dry ingredients together in a bowl.
Drain the buttermilk from the onions. Combine the onions and the mixed dry ingredients and toss (you can do this in the sealed bag, a sealed container, or by hand if you wish).
Heat the oil in a frying pan or pot. Be careful to not burn yourself or start a fire!
Place the onions in the oil until a golden brown.
Remove from oil, dry excess oil off with paper towel. Enjoy!
